Cloudy With a Chance of
Meatballs by: Jodi Barrett
In this story a grandfather tells a bedtime story to his granddaughter and grandson about the town of Chewandswallow. In this town there is no supermarket because it does not rain or snow like normally but it rains food breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Everyone in this town brings forks, knives, and glasses with them when they go out so that they are ready for when it storms. There is a sanitation department in this town that gathers all the left overs and feeds the cats and dogs and throws the rest in the ocean. One day in this town the food starts to get out of hand by coming down with just cheese one day, the next over cooked broccoli, and then brussel sprouts peanut butter and mayonnaise. The food then started to get larger and larger and so did the proportions. It was too big of a job for the sanitation department that the town decided that the only way to survive was to leave Chewandswallow. The people glued together pieces of stale bread and set sail. They found a coastal town and built temporary houses out of the bread; they found it weird that they now had to go to the supermarket to get their food. After the story the kids fell asleep and woke up to snow, while they were sledding the sun looked like a big pad of butter and could have sworn they smelled mashed potatoes.
This is one of my favorite children’s books because it is the ultimate fantasy for a child’s favorite foods to fall out of the sky. The pictures are funny and it keeps you guessing what’s going to fall from the sky next.

Curious George Goes to the Chocolate Factory By: Margret and H. A. Reys
George and his friend went to the chocolate factory and while his friend bought chocolates George got curious. He watched as the chocolates were made on the machine and then wondered how the swirles were made. He went into the room and then peeked into the machine. All of a sudden the chocolates were coming out faster and none of the workers could keep up. George put the chocolates in the boxes and ate his favorites. The workers were so pleased they offered him a box of chocolates but he was too full.
This was a cute story to teach kids to be careful of what they are doing.

The Giant Cabbage An Alaskan Folktale By: Cherie B. Stihler
Moose grows a giant cabbage which is sure to win at the fair, but cannot lift it. Even with Moose, Bear, Wolf, Fox and Hare it would not budge. Porcupine got her tool box and then it began to budge. Then Squirrel suggested a stick, but it only budged a little more. Then all of the animals and vole grabbed hold of the cabbage and pushed and finally the cabbage was in the truck. The cabbage won the prize and they cut it up and had cabbage soup for supper.
This was one of my favorite books because of the cute illustrations. It taught team work and perseverance.

Jumanji by: Chris Van
Allsburg
This is a story about a brother and sister whose parents go out for the afternoon and leave them home alone. They become bored and decide to go to the park, while there they find a board game called Jumanji and take it home to play. The instructions read that if the game was started it had to be finished. The first move of the game Peter rolls a seven and the square reads, “Lion Attacks, move back two spaces.” They immediately regret playing this game when a lion appears on their piano. After this many other things appeared such as a stampede, a monsoon, a snake, a tsetse fly, and a tour guide. Judy finally arrives at the golden city and yells Jumanji winning the game and making everything in their house disappear. They return the game to the park and their parents friends don’t believe what they tell them but say how their sons never read directions or finish anything. They then see their sons running through the park with the board game.
This is a good book to help children learn that reading directions is a very important part of life. It also is a good example of how taking things without asking has consequences.

The Lorax by: Dr. Seuss
This poem reads about a Once-ler who stays in his house above his shop and on special midnights he will come out and tell the story of the lorax, if you’re willing to pay fifteen cents, a nail, and the shell of a great-great-great-grandfather snail. Once you have paid he will tell you the story through a Whisper-ma-Phone. He tells of how the place he lives now used to be so glorious and the trees there were so wonderfully softthat he chopped one down and started knitting a Thneed. When he finished a man popped out of the tree stump and told him he spoke for the trees and that no one would want a thneed. That instant someone came buy and bought it. Everytime the lorax tried to explain himself the Once-ler ignored him. He called his Once-ler family and in no time they had built a factory and were knitting thneeds. The Once-ler chopped trees as fast as he pleased and the lorax came back to inform him that he was also in charge of the bar-ba-loots who no have no more truffula tree fruits. He also had to send away his swans and fish because of the smog and goo the factory was creating. When the last tree was chopped down the lorax kicked himself out. The Once-ler than understood the lorax’s message of unless and gave the boy the last seed of the truffula trees.
This was a fun book because it keeps you interested with the poem and suspense on each page. It also teaches a lesson that everything you do can affect the things and people around you.

He then stepped in a pile of blueberries and sang I love my blue shoes. Then he stepped in mud and sang I love my brown shoes. Great story for when you are trying to teach about optimism.

The Three Wishes By: Madge Tovey
A wood cutter saw the biggest tree ever and went to chop it when he heard a voice yell stop. He looked around but didn't see anyone so he reached back with a mighty swing and heard the voice again. This time he saw a small man sitting on a tree branch. The woodcutter agreed to never cut down his tree and in return the man granted him 3 wishes. He went home and told his wife and they argued all day until he remembered he was hungry and wished for a sausage which angered his wife and he wished her nose to be a sausage, so then the last wish was used to return her nose to normal.
This was is a good book to teach about patience, and to appreciate what you have.

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald
Partridge by: Mem Fox
A boy named Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge lived next to an old peoples home, and enjoyed talking to everyone who lived there. One day he heard his parents talking about the memory of one of his favorites: Miss Nancy. He asked his parents and everyone in the old persons home what a memory is and received many different responses. He then went to find things for her memory such as an egg, sea shells, a puppet, a football and a medal. As she looked at each object she began to remember and told Wilfrid her memories.
I think this is a great book because it shows the elderly in a new light. It can help children realize how interesting or how useful they can be.
